HISTORY

HISTORY AND THE GAME OF GOLF

The first images of those that can be considered the precursors of golfers, appear in some paintings of the sixteenth century depicting Dutch's campaigns with gentlemen committed to hitting a ball with a stick, trying to hit a door or other objects. The Scottish are considered the pioneers of "modern" Golf, which regulated and developped the game on their own "links" seaside, and spread it all over the world, teaching the practice, providing the first equipments, designing and building the first playfields, establishing the basic rules that apply to a large extent still. Common in the two possible "origins" have a ball and a stick (from which derives the name), that in Scots language is called "goff", and in Dutch's called "kolf". The first Scottisch playfields ranged from 6 to 24 holes, to get to the conventional 18-hole we will have to wait until 1871, when the prestigious Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews reduced from 12 to 9 of its holes, because some of them were considered too short. Golfers playing the 9 holes were then forced to start over, and so, in the end, they played 18. This number has become the standard for golf courses and competitions. A nice legend tells that the 18 holes were born with the discovery that you should drink 18 glasses to finish a bottle of wiskey! The goal of each player is to use as few strokes as possible to make the entire course. The essential elements to achieve are reflection, seriousness, stillness and the determination of the player himself. Not by chance Golf is mostly considered  a game of "head", also because he has only himself as an opponent to outplay or to blame. The foundation of Golf is the  "Swing",  that is the complete movement made to hit the ball. The search for the perfect movement still had no end, it's probabilly the reason why Golf is so fascinating.

GOLF AND TOURISM

Nowadays Golf has experienced a significant increase especially among women and young people and it has also joined the sports tourism trade. It is estimated that every year in Europe, about 1 million people move to places that offer opportunities to play Golf. In our country there are about 370 playfields. The most numerous are in Lombardy, the most "ancient" in Tuscany, (the "Florence Golf Club", which is the first Italian Golf Association, was created in Florence in 1886). A centuries-old tradition also exists in Lazio, with the club of Acquasanta, in Rome. Sardinia and Sicily have been the first to understand the tourism potential of Golf courses, in where exist exellent structures, from Cagliari to the heart of Costa Smeralda, from Madonie to Etna Park.
